The regulated elements in ceramic glaze for food-contact applications are lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) — both of which are toxic at low exposure levels. Glaze Formulation

High-Temperature Firing
Food-contact ceramic glaze safety is enhanced by high-temperature firing. At 1,200°C and above, glaze is fully fused to the clay body with a chemical bond that significantly reduces the likelihood of glaze leaching even under repeated contact with acidic substances. Underfired glazes — those not fully matured at the correct temperature — are more susceptible to chemical leaching even when the glaze formulation is lead-free. Batch Testing
Batch testing is the quality control step that converts a glaze formulation claim into a verified compliance statement. Physical Durability for Food Service
Food safety is not only a chemical concern — it is also a physical one. Ceramic tableware in a commercial food service environment must resist chipping, thermal shock (from hot food to cold washing), and the mechanical stresses of commercial dishwasher cycles.
